Milicianes, Unitat contra el Feixisme i el Racisme

Barcelona, 2013

Feixisme mai més!

(Fascism never again!)

In 2012, the Casal Tramuntana, a meeting place for people of fascist and racist ideology, was opened in the Clot neighbourhood of Barcelona. The organizations and associations of the Clot neighbourhood launched a strong campaign to reject the house demanding its closure. The Unitat Contra el Feixisme i el Racisme (Unity against fascism and racism) platform, which was born as a horizontal movement with many sensitivities and positions but with the consensus to fight against racism and fascism, launched a strong campaign against Casal Tramuntana. Faced with the proposal to make a mural for the campaign, artist Roc Blackblock suggested using the quote “el poble que no recorda la seva història està condemnat a repetir-la” (Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it) and painting references to Republican refugees and anti-fascist militias. At that time, the Kasa de la Muntanya mural was being prepared and the material prepared was used to paint the Clot neighbourhood mural.

The mural was sabotaged by members of the Casal Tramuntatna just a few days later of being painted, it was subsequently restored by the artist and sabotaged again. These events went viral and reinforced the rejection of Casal Tramuntana and its activities. All the details of this mural fight can be found related in this articleby Roc Blackblock, with photographs of the various sabotage and reactions and repairs of the artist.

The Casal closed permanently in 2015 thanks to the rejection of the entire community.
